Black and White

The Black and White is a newspaper published solely by the Johnston High School newspaper staff. Publishing for a real audience gives students practice with writing, photography, design, working as a team and working with in a budget. It is exciting to inform people of news and make them thinking with thought-provoking opinion pieces.

In accordance with Iowa law and board policy, students make all decisions of content. Participants work to publish a monthly paper and online edition of the Black and White.

Students take a one-semester journalism course before joining the staff. This course satisfies core English credit for graduation.

Newspaper meets as a class with students covering events in and out of school.

“The Black and White” has earned nearly every state and national award over the past 25 years including Pacemakers, Crowns, the First Amendment Press Freedom award, and the Gallup award.

Graduates of the program include a photo editor for a daily paper, a news director for a major daily paper, a video production specialist, public relations specialists, and quite a few lawyers.
