Prairie Meadows Awards Grant for Classroom Technology

Prairie Meadows will hold a luncheon for the grant recipients on Feb. 11.

Summit Middle school received a $10,000 grant from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino through its 2009 Community Betterment Program thanks to the efforts of 7th grade teachers, Stacey Irvine and Craig Kimpston.  Grant funds will be used to purchase Mimio Interactive Smart Boards for the 6thand 7th grade math and science classrooms.  This technology allows the Summit math and science teachers to save classroom instruction and utilize it in a number of ways. For example, lessons can be posted to web pages, emailed home to absent students, and used by the students for homework instruction and test reviews.  The Mimio technology will help to engage students in their own learning and will provide the opportunity for all learners to achieve personal learning goals in the areas of mathematics and science.  The Prairie Meadows Grants Advisory Committee, comprised of community, business and education leaders from the greater Des Moines area, reviewed all grant requests and recommended funding levels.  Their recommendations were presented to the Prairie Meadows Board of Directors for review and approval.  The Summit MS grant fell under the category of education.  Other grants were awarded in the areas of Arts & Culture, Economic Development and Human Services.
